Most travelers staying in Sorrento ask the same question: can I just take the train? For Pompeii alone the answer is yes. For Pompeii and Vesuvius on the same day, it gets complicated, because there is no train to the crater and the crater ticket must be booked online for a time slot.
The quick answer
The Circumvesuviana local train runs from Sorrento to Pompei Scavi in about 35 to 45 minutes for a few euros. For Vesuvius you then need a shuttle bus from Pompei or Ercolano and a timed online crater ticket. Doing both by public transport is possible but slow; a bus tour from about $133 includes both tickets and the transport.
How do you get from Sorrento to Pompeii by train?
Take the Circumvesuviana local train towards Naples and get off at Pompei Scavi, about 35 to 45 minutes from Sorrento.
Trains run roughly every half hour and cost a few euros each way. The station is right by the Porta Marina entrance to the ruins. In summer the train is often standing room only, and there is no air conditioning guarantee.

How do you get from Pompeii to Vesuvius without a tour?
By shuttle bus from Pompei or Ercolano up to the car park area, then on foot along the Gran Cono path, with a crater ticket booked online in advance.
The park sells crater tickets online only, for timed entries, and closes the trail on weather-alert days. Independent visitors driving up park at about 800 metres and take a short shuttle or walk to the trailhead at about 1,000 metres.
Rather not juggle trains and shuttles? The full day includes the coach and both tickets.
Check dates for the Pompeii and Vesuvius full dayCan you do Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day by public transport?
Yes, but plan it carefully: match your crater time slot to the shuttle times and leave Pompeii early enough.
The crater trail closes earlier than Pompeii, at 3 PM in winter and 5 to 6 PM in summer, so most independent visitors do Vesuvius in the morning and Pompeii in the afternoon. Every connection is a chance to lose half an hour.
Train or tour: how do they compare?
The train is far cheaper; the tour is faster, includes both tickets and a guide, and removes the Vesuvius logistics.
| On your own | Bus tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Pompeii entry | €20 (under-18s free) | Included, skip-the-line |
| Vesuvius crater ticket | About €10 to €12, online only | Included |
| Transport | Train plus shuttle buses | Coach from Sorrento |
| Guide | Extra, or none | Licensed guide in Pompeii |
| Time | A long day of connections | About 8 hours door to door |
| From | Under €50 per adult | $133 per adult |

Is the Circumvesuviana safe?
It is a busy commuter line used by locals and visitors every day; the main issues are crowding and pickpockets.
Keep bags closed and in front of you, especially in summer and around Naples. Tourist trains with guaranteed seats run seasonally at a higher price.
When is a tour clearly the better choice?
When you want both sites in one day, are travelling in the heat of summer, or would rather not book timed tickets yourself.
Guests repeatedly say the transfer was the best part of the deal: one wrote that they did not have to check train and bus times to make it on time. Families and older travelers also value the coach waiting between the two sites.

When you only want Pompeii, want to stay longer than a tour allows, or are on a tight budget.
The Pompeii Express by train is a middle way: an assistant meets you at Sorrento station with train tickets, and a guide takes you round Pompeii for two hours. Afterwards you can stay as long as you like.

What about cruise passengers in Sorrento?
The shared tours from Sorrento are not designed around ship schedules, and Gray Line says so in its listing.
If you arrive by tender, look for a shore excursion with a guaranteed return, or do Pompeii only by train and leave plenty of margin.
